There are many ways to decorate your fireplace mantel and make it look like something out of a magazine. You can add shelves, lamps, candles, books and more! This blog post is going to give you 9 professional tips on what we think work best when adding extra decorations to the space.
Think and Plan
At the fireplace mantel you will show off your most prized possessions. Assess what you already have for this area, make a list of the things that really matter to you and build on them. You can also use some vases or dishes to fill in empty spaces. Even you can place fireplace mantel design and upgrade at the same time.
Go Seasonal
Use items that are seasonally appropriate, whether they are real or artificial, placing pine branches around wreath frames is only going out of season when winter does.
Place Family Photo
Place family photos over the fireplace mantel, everyone loves to see themselves! Remember though if your photo is small put multiple ones together so it looks like there’s more than one person in frame – up cycle by using old medals or frames. Make a garland out of photos of friends, family or pets by printing them onto paper rolls (like toilet roll holders) – frame them if you wish but I love this unique approach especially since they’ll be changing all the time as people come and go from your life.
Place Large Photo
Fill a large frame with family photos and place it in the center of the fireplace mantel, similar to a painting over a mantle in a living room. Larger photos always make a statement – but in this case don’t overcrowd the frame!
Artificial Plant another thing
Place an artificial plant in every other space on your fireplace mantel, different heights and sizes look good together. If you’re going for real plants remember that they will need watering so plan ahead and get low maintenance ones such as succulents or cactuses. You can also clip fake branches into real or fake plants for added interest too.
Hanging Wooden Block
Hang 4 wooden blocks from the ceiling using rope and paint them white if you wish – add eye hooks for suspending your pots and place hooks where you can for hanging pot holders.
Mirror
Add a mirror above the fireplace mantel, it will add light to the room and make it look bigger and brighter. If you don’t like the idea of showing off your most prized possessions then one that shows only reflections is perfect! Oh and they’re very inexpensive too.
Peg Board
Try putting up peg boards around your fireplace mantel- paint them white if you want and fill the pegs with plants, vases, frames or whatever you like – suspend plants from them so it looks like there’s more than one plant. Cool idea for an indoor garden!
Make DIY Décor Items
Make lots of your own decor items to save lots of money – I love the idea of using wooden crates as shelves and then filling them up with old books (I got some good ideas here ), flowers (from the dollar store), family photos (use glue sticks to attach photos to thin pieces of cardboard) and Christmas lights inside glass jars. It’s very inexpensive but makes a big impact especially if you use colored lights like red or blue or even white if you don’t mind spending time untangling them afterwards!
